Solid Back

Solid back refers to the area behind the face of the ring being solid and not open or uncovered. It is common especially with gold masonic rings to keep that area behind the face open instead of filled with gold. The solid back designation lets you know that this area will be filled in and the inside of the shank will be smooth all the way around. Most sterling silver rings are only created in solid back but there are examples of non-solid back sterling silver rings, especially when a mold originally created to make gold rings is used.
