Rhodium is extremely hard and highly reflective. It is common to plate sterling silver with rhodium to avoid tarnishing and create an extra white appearance. Like all plating, it will wear off over time. However, unlike gold plating, rhodium plating wears much better because when it begins to rub off in higher friction parts of the ring, it will not be nearly as noticeable. As the rhodium does wear off over time though, the areas of the ring no longer covered with the plating will be more prone to tarnish. This is usually not an issue though because the same friction that caused the rhodium to rub off will also keep that area free of oxidation/tarnish.
